Primary Abstractions
3 short colorful poems. Never-before-seen. Just for you.
PRIMARY ABSTRACTION # 1: Red
Red is not soft-spoken
nor does it have any desire to be.
It calls to me
from a full box of crayons
whenever I feel the need to make a point.
Mommy sees Red
whenever people are cruel to other people.
All I know is
my Red sneakers make me feel powerful
and Red roses make people cry from being so happy.
And Red noses mean we may get out of school because of snow.
And Red,
made Rudolph a film star.
PRIMARY ABSTRACTION # 2: Blue
Blue skies smile at me.
Blue people don’t.
Bluebells don’t ring when the wind blows
but little boy Blue blows a horn when cows wander off.
Baby Blue is not the color of babies
but it covers the walls
and halls
and overalls.
And it is the color I become
when I look at myself in my mother’s eyes.
Blue oceans arrive on picture postcards in the mailbox,
and Bluebirds sing songs all day.
I’ve even heard it said that blessings come
“Out of the Blue.”
If this is true,
I want to live there.
PRIMARY ABSTRACTION # 3: Yellow
Yellow is not the color of cowards
or of Ol’ dogs.
It shows up in sunrises
and sunsets
and skirts along the edges of a candle flame.
It makes appearances
on jumpers
and sun suits
and on my dinner plate
in the form of Yellow squash.
A field of Yellow sunflowers
makes people stop
and park their cars
and take photographs to capture their beauty.
But Yellow can’t be captured.
It is a free spirit
with ideas of its own
whose purpose is to go out into the world
spreading light.
It is not shy about its mission
and especially enjoys taking people by surprise.

I could see those poems being written as part of a book about a little girl writing from first person perspective. A little southern girl, of course.!
Delightful! Another side of your writing life that most of us didn't know about! Thanks for sharing. (And there are those of us for whom RED is IT!)
